Whenever I’ve taken on a new client, in our first or second practice, this inevitably comes up. They tell me about a teammate misbehaving. Could be a high performing teammate, could be a bully, could be a good dude who simply doesn’t know what they’re doing. Does. Not. Matter. My client has not spoken hard truth to ‘em.
I tell my client to take it on. The response is most often this and nearly verbatim. “Chet, you don’t understand. I don’t want to be that guy. I don’t like being that guy.” My response is ccd.
You already are.
Lead anything and it’s your job to be that guy. You do not have to learn to love this part of the job. You don’t even have to like it. You can forever loathe being the dude that regulates the room. You can’t be a leader and not be that guy. Sucks to lead, huh. Where, leader, are you avoiding being that guy? Step up. En brera. Be that guy. Good…
Live hard. Love harder…
