Amateur, pro, and master…

Most people lead lives of quiet desperation, Thoreau said not so long ago. His “and” is powerful and mostly forgotten. Here’s his complete thought. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation, and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Damn.

I’m listening to Switchfoot’s song titled More than Fine, as I write this rant. The message? Most humans settle for ok. BBTL is not about accepting ok. It’s not about settling for good enough. We are designed by a loving God who does not want us to settle for making mud pies in the slums when He offers us the chance for a holiday at sea (Thanks, C.S. Lewis).

I recently challenged one of my few to stop playing small and settling for ok. Amateur status is well below their standard. Being a pro is so 101, you know? I challenged this person to master the art of living and live in alignment in work and life. It was hard OPUS to hear and hard OPUS to share. Hard and life giving. Day 6. Fact. Both sender and receiver are better not bitter. Truth hurts. Truth does not harm, at least not for long. Truth frees. Thank you, God, for embodying truth in Love. Nothing better.

God, help me give and receive. God, help me give, receive, and give again. God, help me not be a one way Cul-de-Sac, but a free flowing conduit. God, help me not settle for being average or even being a pro, you know. God, help me become a master in the art of living. God, help me give and receive more. Where friend are you settling for ok when more than fine is within your reach? Slow down. Reflect. Write. Sing your song. Let others help you. Together we transform. Always together.

Live hard. Love harder…
